Thebes was a major force in Greek history prior to its destruction by Alexander the Great in 335 BC, and was the most dominant city-state at the time of the Macedonian conquest of Greece. During the Byzantine period, the city was famous for its silks.

On the morning of 23rd March 2018, Moroccan born French national, Radouane Ladkim, 25, killed four people and injured a further 16 after carrying out a series of attacks.
The petty criminal known to police and on the radar for links to radical Salafist networks, first approached a parked car in Carcasonne, wounding the driver and shooting dead an accompanying passenger, whose body was later found hidden in a bush.
Lakdim then drove the car towards military and police barracks, shooting at four officers returning from a jog, seriously injuring one.
The attacker then continued to Super U supermarket in Trèbes, armed with a gun, knife and explosives.

Beltrame was shot whilst entering the supermarket, and later died in hospital from bullet and stab wounds.
